Safer Neighbourhoods
Safer Neighbourhoods is the new style policing for London. Each ward will have its own team of Police made up of 1 Sergeant, 2 Police Officers and 3 Community Officers (PCSO’s) coming with the promise that they will not be pulled away from the ward to deal with more pressing issues such as ‘to man football matches’.
Safer Neighbourhood teams work with the community to make neighbourhoods safer places to live.
The team work for a community panel, which meets every 6 weeks. In the meeting local residents
decide what their priorities are for their area and inform the police how they want them to perform.
If local priorities are not met the panel members can directly hold the officers responsible and accountable.
This way of policing is not a new idea it stems from the old school ways of policing when officers were more community friendly and out and about on the beat and knowing the local residents in their area by name. Each team has a mobile so if something is happening in the area you can call the number and speak directly to a member of the team and there should be a response pending on the nature of the call.
