Sami’s Birmingham Residential

On the 24th-25th of February 2007, Sami represented Camden on a Birmingham residential where he trained with other YOF panel members from all over the UK. They form the Youth Empowerment Panel as judges for the ‘Action Speaks Louder’ competition for the best youth project.

The competition was first held at local level on the 24th of April and then at the national level on the 29th of April. Sami writes about his experience here:

I’ll Choose To Make The Change
Rather Then Live The Change

By Sami Ibrahim,16 years old

Actions Speak Louder is a competition to find the most innovative projects developed through the Youth Opportunity and Capital Fund during the financial year April 2006 - March 2007. It aims to recognise and celebrate the achievement of young people at local and national level in developing their projects. The Youth Challenge panel is a team of young judges who will assess all the entries and pick up the winning projects. At present we are working towards a major event on the 29th March in London at the Imax cinema. I had learnt important skills in such a short period of time. This helped me gain confidence in myself. The tasks and activities were organised and deep down I was interested in doing this because I am looking to be in this scene in the future. The residential helps you to have pride in yourself and increased my interest and motivation to make a change in our society. There were times where I was bored but because it was such a short period of time to absorb all that information it did not affect me too much. Overall I enjoyed myself and I find that a residential like this gives us opportunities in life and everyone should grab it.

Sami has been working with the Youth Opportunity Fund in Camden since it was set up. He has been developing an excellent job as a decision-maker. When the opportunity came to be national judge he did not hesitate. He has been brilliant! We are all really proud of him.
