My trip to Scotland
Article by Yaya

I’ve been in the UK for 5 years now, and am used to London’s exciting but non-unique city life. However to know the real Britain, I prefer spending time with a local. I’m keen to experience British customs and traditions so I thought perhaps I could stay with a friendly British family.

My visit was confirmed within 2 weeks after I applied in HOST.com in August. My hosts were the sweet and lovely Mr and Mrs Morris, who were born before the Second War and live in Scotland. First they met me at the Over-sea House on Prince Street, and drove me up to the top of a
mountain to see beautiful Edinburgh. We then had a big lunch – I had trout with lemon in raspberry sauce and a drink – in the restaurant opposite the famous Edinburgh Castle. There I could see the clouds moving and birds flying on the top of the castle. How wonderful !

Later we went back to their home and watched “Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde” at night. I found my room very clean and it even had traditional decorations.
I was touched by their care and attention to detail.

I was eager to observe and immerse myself in culture the minute I met them. They obliged by introducing me to Shakespeare’s “The winter’s tale”, and taking me to a John Scrimger Concert, Ossian's Hall and national park, the Festival Theatre, an old exhibition and their local church during my short stay.

Time flew during my stay. I have been so lucky to learn from being with them, and had a really great time. I would like to thank my host parents again for their kindness and treating me like a granddaughter. Gerald Morris always cooked delicious English food for me – breakfast, coffee time, lunch, high tea and dinner. I really miss his home-made butter corns so much.
