Tania Interview
Article by Helen Zhu, age 19

Young Parent
Don’t Panic,
We’re here to help

Teenage Parent Project is a one-stop information website for young people, which was set up by Tania Jacobs, a mother and criminology student at the University of Greenwich.

Tania, 22, has just received £4,000 from the National Lottery to set up TPP’s website. In August she visited Camden Summer University journalists for a chat about her new venture, which will be launched at the end of September.

Who is Tania Jacobs?
I am a highly motivated person and truly believe that having children is not a reason to be held back in life. Because of this I am currently working hard to set up a website which will allow young parents to access
information on finance, childcare, travel, IT training and much more.

Tania on her background
I left home when I was 14 and was fortunate to have been in touch with some great youth workers from drop-in centres and other organisations. After I had a baby at 16, they helped me to stay in education and encouraged me to be ambitious and achieve my dreams. Their support helped build up my confidence. Having my son, Dontae, now five, grounded me and made me take life more seriously.

Tania on her latest project
While studying I was given money for travel, had childcare paid for and got a free computer from the Prince’s Trust. Along the way I met a lot of young people who were not as fortunate as me because they did not know
about the services that were available to them, in many cases, free of charge. This is why I’m setting up TPP so that young parents can access relevant services and as a result make the most of opportunities that are
available to them.

Tania’s advice to young parents
When you’re in trouble, face the problem and ask for help from various charities, organisations and government bodies, many of these will be featured on TPP’s website. Every problem can be solved, so never panic.
