Showcase Project

Esforal youth band

This project aimed to set up a band that plays Latin American music. They would acquire second-hand instruments from charity shops. The project runs from June 2007 to March 2008.

The YOF panel visited the project to see how they were getting on. This is the feedback: The venue was a great, bright space. The groups consisted of those learning one instrument with an instructor. Skills gained were to play the piano, guitar and drum kit. Young people were respectful to the instruments and teachers, who gave good guidance and support. 14 young people are involved in this project, with 4 adults working with them. There was a great sense of inclusion, with participants from different ages and ethnic backgrounds as well as young people with disabilities attending the workshops and Spanish classes. Young people were very enthusiastic and motivated to pick up the skills. The project provides great opportunity and inspiring support, especially with a volunteer teaching piano and violin. Once a week the project leaders meet to discuss and evaluate the project.
