Showcase Project
Surma Youth Centre & Samuel Lithgow Youth Club:
'Fit and Healthy Young People' Cohesion Residential
When: October 2006
Venue: Avon Tyrell, Hampshire
The idea of participating in a positive activity on a structured weekend away and be able to gain nationally-recognised qualifications (emergency first aid, and food hygiene) attracted many participants. The 14 places available to all 17-18 year olds were taken up within days of announcement of the project!
We have been able to run this project efficiently because of the
enthusiasm of the participants and their project leaders who said by
being involved they had gained skills in communication and organisation and self-confidence and empowerment. Everyone felt that the residential had a good contrast of both educational and leisure activities, the latter involved facing many of their phobias.
This project has been very successful, so popular that there were
demands from other age groups so we hope to provide the same opportunity in the future.
