Showcase Project
Surma Youth Centre: Training Residential
When: November 2006
Venue: Avon Tyrell, Hampshire
20 young persons were involved in this project to raise money and plan the residential, but only 15 actually went for the trip. As leaders, we had improved our confidence, communication and interpersonal skills, being given a valuable insight on how to budget and plan the trips/activities from start to finish. Participants commented that the residential improved their teamwork abilities, having to work together and support each other on some activities (rope challenge, raft building etc).
The cooperation of young people from different cultural backgrounds that normally have mistrust and conflict with each other, working together towards a common goal and realising we have a lot in common if we have the opportunities to meet and share.
Many young people enquired but they had to be turned down so it was hoped that a bigger residential could be planned.
